Have you ever been surprised by your children’s reaction to something you did for them? Perhaps you brought home a small toy for your son, and he continued to thank you for several days afterwards.

Perhaps you took your daughter for afternoon tea, and a year later, she still talked about the special event.

We communicate our love to our children in many ways, but some speak more loudly to them than others. Christian psychologist Gary Chapman has identified these different ways of communicating love as “love lan­guages.” These five languages—words of affirmation, quality time, gift giving, acts of service, and physical touch—enrich our relationships with our children as well as with our spouses.

We have the ability to “speak” all five of these languages to our chil­dren—and we should. However, by the time your child is about seven years old, you may be able to determine which one of the five languages com­municates your love to your child most convincingly.
